SharePoint - Publishing Portal size Vs Content Database size

Our intranet MOSS Publishing Portal site collection size is 600 MB, whereas
the site collection content database size is morethan 2GB. This content DB
contains no other sites.

Which one is correct? Why is the difference?

Justin,

You probably have versioning turned on which means that for every copy of a
file that exists (version wise), you have an individual file sitting in the
content database, thereby inflating the overall size to 2 GB whereas the
total major version is 600 mb or so...
