SharePoint - "!New" Tag in Item Lists

When you upload a new document or add an item to a list in SharePoint,
it is given a tag of "!New" in the name field. Is this controlled any
where and if so, is there a way to set how long an item is designated
as new?
Thanks in advance.

Yes it's controlled. It's different for WSS 2.0 and WSS 3.0 (or SPS 2003
and MOSS 2007) and you don't say what you are running.
In one it is by default one day to midnight server time the same day and
in the other it is by default two days to midnight server time the
second day.
There's a KB article on this (and how to either remove it (0) or change
it (n i.e. 3, 4, 5 etc.)
