SharePoint - Mysite importance and purpose

Hi,

I think I must be missing something here. What are the benefits of allowing
Mysite creation to the organisation? I can see a few cons but am not sure I
see the pros.

In our case we are looking at a replacing the existing intranet using MOSS
2007. What functionality will we lose if we simply dont allow My Sites to be
created?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

MySites are great for profile management and people search.

For instance, you could have a number of skills inhouse, each user could
maintain their mysite with their skills, and a simple people search will
tell you, who is good at what.

And also, it is a personal workspace for the end user.

Umm .. marketing aside, it's more headache than worth IMO, but most
certainly a client may present a usecase that makes mysites extremely
compelling.

Sahil,

Thank you for your helpful reply. You have confirmed my thoughts and made
me more comfortable with our decision not to allow them (for now anyway).
