MOSS 2007 and Index server

I was wondering if someone could explain the architecture and provide me with
some guidance as to how I should configure this.

We have a server running Windows 2003 Index Server which indexes around
300,000 files. The search results are not what users expect, so I'd like to
try MOSS 20007 (on a separate server).

If I leave the files on the index server, and I add the folders to MOSS
2007, will it use the index server logic for the search, in which case I
shouldn't see an improvement int he results?

Is there a way to set it up so that MOSS 2007 will crawl and index the
directories, bypassing the old index server?

The normal method as I understand it would be that MOSS 2007 would search

The normal method as I understand it would be that MOSS 2007 would
search (crawl and index) your SPS 2003 data itself.

I.e. you would include your server containing the SPS 2003 data in your
search pattern. It wouldn't be searching your index server or indexes
but regarding your MOSS server as just one of the various locations of
data to be indexed.

Sorry I could not answer earlier. For some reason I could not see my entry at
all in the forum. Thanks. I will take a look at it and play around with it a
bit more.
