SharePoint - Extranet access to Sharepoint site

Greetings,

My company has an intranet/extranet site so that users can log in to a
secure website from home to see documents, etc. YRL for extranet is
www.website/extranet and Windows Authentication is required. I'm trying to
replace this with Sharepoint. I've installed Sharepoint on a separate server
and have created a virtual directory on the same server as the
intranet/extranet. I can access the Sharepoint site from within our network
at http://servername. However when I try to access Sharepoint from
www.website/extranet/sharepoint I'm asked to login and then after 3 times
login fails and I get 401 access denied.
I setup alternate address mappings in Sharepoint Central but I don't see how
to give users access to the alternate mappings; if this is even the issue.
When I look at the user settings in my Sharepoint site the users have access
to http://servername, but not to www.website/extranet/sharepoint.
Any help would be appreciated.

Can you give us more information on your extranet?

Is your extranet box a SharePoint server running as a WFE, or are you
publishing the server to the extranet using ISA or some similar software?

Are uses able to hit the site internally via the extranet URL?

My Best advice is to ready the document below on MOSS Extranet
configuration. It is about 120+ pages, but there is a lot of good info.
