sharing webparts across subsites

I am trying to use a common announcement webpart from a main across several
subsites. Any ideas how to do this?

When i add a webpart onto one of the subsites, it creates a subsite unique
webpart, and I cant seem to find the webpart that I want to insert here.

There are a couple of ways this can be done, depending upon your setup.

There are a couple of ways this can be done, depending upon your setup. If
you are using MOSS, then you could add the Content Query Web Part to the
pages on your other sites and configure it to display the data from your
announcements list at the root. WSS does not have this web part however.
Another option is to use SharePoint Designer and go to each site and
configure a data connection to another site. Then you can drop the
announcements list from your main site onto a page in the subsite.
